The 5th Dartmoor Firkin Challenge
Sunday 30th May 2016
This years Dartmoor Firkin Challenge was organised by The Royal Oak Inn. Each team of 2 is required to carry an empty 9 gallon firkin around the 4 1/2 mile course. The firkin must be carried between the runners at all times. Each firkin weighs approximately 10kg. The event started and finished on the green outside the Royal Oak Inn at Meavy. There was a checkpoint at the top of Sheeps Tor. Here each competitor is required to drink 1⁄2 pint of Dartmoor Ale before embarking on the return leg. The first Male & Female teams over the finish line received a case of Dartmoor Ale.
Fantastic weather over the bank holiday weekend ensured we had a great turn out from competitors and spectators. There was a fantastic atmosphere.
The course record, set by Jay Horton & Gary Andrews in 2015, is 37:00 mins.
1st Male team ~Nigel Jenkins & Gary Court ~ 40:10
2nd Male team ~ Justin Crewe & Joseph Long ~ 43:58
3rd Male team ~ Iain Smith & Nick Kent ~ 48:42
